When I was in secondary school, maturity to me was my friend comporting himself when I was talking to a lady. A mature lady to me was the one who accepted my advances.
But after some time, maturity stopped meaning those things to me. I grew. Maturity soon became the ability of an individual to navigate critical situations & handle matters with enough wittiness.
These past few days, I’ve heard many people accusing others of being immature. Imagine someone who is like a role model to you being accused of immaturity because of an issue he/she had with the accuser. It made me question what maturity really is. Is it just what we all say it is? Or does it have a general meaning?
Does it mean that everyone who doesn’t meet up to the standard of what I think maturity is is immature? Let’s dive into it.
Let’s start with the dictionary definition of maturity. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, maturity is a state or quality of being mature. The word mature is defined as “based on slow careful consideration” and I think that is in line with what I believe it is.
To me, maturity is seen in the way you handle matters and make decisions. In football, what differentiates a mature player from an immature one is the way he handles the ball and his wittiness in making decisions. Maturity comes from experience. It’s a result of things you’ve seen, heard, and your hands have handled in life.
It’s safe to say that without experience, you can’t be mature. A mature individual isn’t perfect. The person is prone to mistakes as maturity is progressive. Just like doings, maturity has levels. Some people have met me and have argued about my age when they find out. This is because I talk above my age and how I handle matters is way above my age.
My view about maturity doesn’t have to be your view about it. This view is something I grew into. That’s why the headline reads “What does maturity mean to you?”
Now, I direct the question to you. What does maturity mean to you? When you say or believe that someone is mature, what do you mean? Tell me in the comment section.
How is everything going though? How are you coping in this economy? You can tell me about it in the comment section too.
Till when next I write to you,
Stay Strategic About Your View Of Life.
I think maturity is contextual, one could be mature when it comes to hygiene and immature when it comes to relationships.
In all the definition is still as you stated.
